Why I Hike: Savannah Cummins

I first came across Savannah Cummins' photography when I was researching hikes in the Tetons. Her shots captured those outdoors moments perfectly. Savannah is an outdoors photographer, climber, hiker, and genuinely outdoorsy spirt, and here's why she hikes.

Why do you hike?
I hike to climb! Climbing is my passion and it turns out you usually can’t climb rocks or ice without a little bit of hiking to get there!

What’s your favorite place to hike?
Grand Teton National Park, it’s beautiful!

Where would you like to hike?
Anywhere with mountains and beautiful views!

What’s the craziest animal encounter you’ve had on the trail?
I was hiking down from Hanging Canyon in Grand Teton National Park, a couple walked passed me in a hurry and within 5 seconds they were sprinting back hiding behind me, a bear was on the trail. The couple did the opposite of what your supposed to do and left it to me. I stood tall and yelled “go away bear!” and luckily it worked!

What piece of gear do you love and why?
Headlamps! I always bring a headlamp with me, when there’s not a full moon and you end up on on the wall or trail longer than expected a headlamp is key!

What advice would you give to people wanting to start hiking?
Just do it! Who cares if you own hiking boots or not, hiking is a fancy word for walking. If you can walk, you can hike, and I guarantee it’ll take you to beautiful places and offer amazing experiences!

Savannah Cummins

Savannah Cummins grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio. Weekends throughout her childhood were spent playing in the creek behind her house, hunting for salamanders and catching frogs. When she was 16, her parents sent her on her first ‘real’ outdoor experience, camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. This trip was an eye opening experience for her. She experienced some beautiful places and realized how much she enjoyed the simplicity of life outside.
