Why I Hike: Kyle Frost

Kyle Frost is an adventure photographer, digital product designer, and lead designer at The Outbound Collective website. Kyle is based out Boulder, CO, and gets tons of trail miles under his boots in the Rockies. Here's why he hikes.

Why do you hike?
Honestly, I like getting to places that most people can’t. There’s nothing better than a long day in the backcountry where you’re challenging yourself, reaching incredible views and not seeing many people.

What’s your favorite place to hike?
I lived most of my life in California, so it used to be the Sierras, and more specifically Yosemite. I even worked there for a summer. The Yosemite backcountry holds a special place in my heart. But more recently, I gotta say that Colorado has taken the crown. There are some amazing spots in RMNP and other areas of the Rockies that have incredible class III/IV climbing and don’t see many crowds.

Where would you like to hike?
I’d love to get to some pretty unconventional places. Recently I’ve been interested in Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, Slovenia, and Greenland.

What’s the craziest animal you’ve seen on the trail?
Well we didn’t actually SEE it, but last summer I was at the start of a long day with my girlfriend and we were hiking through an aspen grove at like 4 in the morning. Suddenly we heard this insanely loud crashing through the forest in front of us, coming towards us and then down the hill below. We couldn’t see anything, but it sounded huge. We’re pretty sure it was an elk or a moose.

What piece of gear do you love and why?
I have a Colombia tech hiking shirt that is the piece of gear that I’ve owned the longest and still use. I think it’s going on close to 15 years now. Still fits great, doesn’t show much wear, and I’ll keep wearing it until it falls apart.

What advice would you give to people wanting to start hiking?
Just go. You might not be hiking any crazy trails when you start, but just getting out there is better than not. There are a multitude of hikes, even close to urban areas to get you started. Just check out www.theoutbound.com  (CH – you can also find hikes near you on my hiking trails page). Finding some friends that are more experienced than you is both a great way to learn what you need to know and to discover places they already know about.
